September 2025
President’s Report
September is the start of Autumn (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). Fall foliage will start showing up around us with vibrant colors and cooler temperatures. For many, this is a favorite season, one of change. Change can be interpreted as difficult, yet it can also be beautiful.
Speaking of beautiful change, have you seen our mentions that we are changing locations for 2026? We are going toward the West Coast. Why might you ask? We feel it is important to be present in varied regions to attract new members and sponsors who may not have been able to join us in another location. So, we expect to gain some returning additive representatives who were waiting for a change from us.

Shannon VanDeren
President
As you know, we host AMUG as an all-inclusive event… this creates limitations to the venue options. We want all of us to stay together, which means that we need plenty of room for conference activities (meeting rooms, main gathering space, expo space, and dining for all of us), enough hotel rooms that we can all stay within the conference venue, and the ability to host us in our desired date range. We love the intimacy of AMUG and the inclusive nature of our conference that allows for terrific learning and networking.
If you’ve been regularly coming to AMUG Conferences year over year, we thank you with absolute sincerity. If you’ve taken a hiatus, we are ready for you to come back, and we hope that Reno will help ignite your wish to return. If you haven’t been to an AMUG Conference before, how may I help you understand more about the conference? I’d love to share a chat if you’d like to learn more about it.
As you start planning for AMUG 2026, there are some things to be thinking about… registration, submissions, nominations, etc. I’ll keep sharing the links with you for ease so we can keep your brain power focused on your creativity! Let’s start with these:
Registration
Attendee registration is open. Sign up before December 12 to enjoy early-bird pricing.
Sponsorship registration is open. Review our prospectus here. It offers information on the various tiers of sponsorship and the inclusions for each. Note that we have added a few additional options for sponsorship as well (Training Labs for Diamond or Platinum sponsors, Start-Up Launchpad, Wordly translation services, lanyards, lounge, breaks, and hotel signage). To register for your booth, click here.
Hotel Reservations
We have negotiated a great rate at the Grand Sierra Resort. You may enjoy our discounted rates throughout the conference dates: Sunday, March 15, through Thursday, March 19. We also have a limited number of rooms available at the negotiated rate for those who want to arrive early (Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 15) to enjoy the area of Reno and Lake Tahoe. To make a reservation, please click here.
To view all the amenities the hotel offers, visit the Grand Sierra Resort’s website. A visit to the Reno/Tahoe tourism board’s website will show you what the area holds in store for you.
Speaker Portal
Our call for speakers is open. You don’t need to have your presentation complete – just in a state where you can submit an abstract. Be thinking about a presentation, a subject matter expert panel, or a workshop and submit that abstract here.
Nominations
Our board positions cycle every two years. We have FIVE positions open this year for election (or maybe re-election for some). We will open the Submission of Interest link on November 1.
Be thinking about this… do you wish to be a part of the AMUG Board and help steer its efforts and growth? It is an honor to be a part of the strategy, planning, and execution of our precious event. You may complete a Submission of Interest, and/or our nominating committee might call upon you to measure your interest.
You can see the job descriptions here. This year, we have President, Vice President, Treasurer, Director at Large, and Director of Membership up for election for the next two years (note that Treasurer and Director at Large positions are appointed… yet you may still submit your interest in filling these roles).
Be on the lookout for other links relevant to the AMUG Conference (such as pre-conference trainings and pre-conference tours). I’ll work to keep it simple for you!
Your input, your participation, and your feedback matter. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me; I’ll say it again — I want to hear you! Let’s have a conversation.
Appreciating you and your creativity,
Shannon VanDeren

LEAP 71: Why Engineering Must Move Beyond CAD To Realise The Promise of AI and AM
While AI is accelerating innovation across industries, engineering design remains slow, manual, and opaque, constrained by tools such as CAD that capture geometry but not intent.
In this article, LEAP 71 co-founder Lin Kayser argues that to realize the full potential of AM and enable meaningful AI in hardware development, we have to rethink how machines are designed. His solution is Computational Engineering, a system that encodes physics, constraints, and logic directly into code, transforming engineering into a scalable, intelligent process.

America Makes, MMX, & Where U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Goes from Here
Many people have said more or less this same thing over the last few years: what’s standing in the way of AM’s scale-up in the U.S. defense industrial base isn’t technology — or even funding, at this point — but policy. One of the few institutions that exists primarily to address that problem is Ohio’s America Makes, the original Manufacturing Innovation Institute (MII).
America Makes is the MII focused on all things 3D printing. Every year, it hosts the Members Meeting and Exchange (MMX) event near its headquarters in Youngstown. This somewhat small gathering has a disproportionately large impact on setting the agenda for advanced manufacturing activity across the Western world.
It is safe enough to say that MMX felt particularly relevant in 2025, if only due to the dizzying macro backdrop at the center of where America Makes’ concerns are situated. The main reason for that, perhaps, is because, after years of gradual movement towards the spotlight, reshoring has finally broken through to the center stage of U.S. public discourse.
