President’s Report

The AMUG Board, committees, and volunteers are settling into their roles and working hard to make AMUG 2027 a great educational conference. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes, and I’m excited to see our team bringing together the learning, conversations, and connections that make AMUG special.

Our members make all this possible. If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved, I encourage you to take that next step, whether by volunteering or running for an AMUG Board position. The following board positions will be open for election during the 2027 AMUG Conference:

AMUG is seeking engaging, technically rich, educational sessions given by users of AM technology to elevate the conference experience and share knowledge across the AM community. Abstract submissions for presentations, panels, roundtable discussions, and workshops are now being accepted for the 2027 conference.

Flying in for the 2027 AMUG Conference? We’re making it easier to get from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City.

AMUG will offer arranged bus transportation between Philadelphia International Airport and the conference hotel, providing a convenient option for attendees traveling to and from the conference.

Smoothing Prosthetics with PostPro Pure

Vapor smoothing is often discussed in terms of the finished part: it achieves smoother and sealed surfaces, reduces porosity, and improves functional performance. Today, we want to look at the consumable that makes that finish possible.

Printed in Seconds: Six Volumetric 3D Printing Projects to Know in 2026

One of the cornerstones of AM is the principle of “layer by layer.” Well, there’s one 3D printing technique that disagrees with that completely: volumetric 3D printing. Instead of building an object slice by slice, it cures an entire object at once inside a vat of photosensitive resin, more like a hologram materializing in three dimensions than anything we’d normally call printing.

What makes volumetric 3D printing worth watching is speed and precision. Objects that would take hours to print layer by layer can be cured in seconds, with no visible layer lines and virtually no support structures needed. That’s opening doors in bioprinting (gentle curing preserves living cells), optics and microfluidics (where sub-layer precision matters), and rapid prototyping.

Ceramic AM Enables 500 mm Dual-channel Gas Distribution Ring for High-speed PEALD and ALE in the Same Chamber

As semiconductor manufacturers move towards larger substrates and faster atomic-scale processes, the components inside wafer production tools must scale up without compromising precision. Plasway-Technologies, Alumina Systems, and Lithoz have developed a 500 mm dual-channel alumina gas distribution ring for Plasway-Technologies’ FAST Atomic Layering Process (FALP) platform.

Produced using Lithoz’s ceramic AM, the ring enables high-speed Plasma Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (PEALD) and Atomic Layer Etching (ALE) in the same chamber, while maintaining highly uniform gas distribution across large wafer substrates.

The Evolution and Future of the AM Services Market (and How We’re Tracking It)

If it feels like AM and 3D printing technologies are finding a place in the mainstream of everyday products and life, it’s because they are. It’s been a long road, but today additive technologies are finally in the conversations of engineers and product designers at the earliest planning and design stages of making things.

Although there are still challenges to solve and roadblocks to many different applications where additive could be used, many real, commercial parts are manufactured via additive processes around the world today.

Earlier this year, Additive Manufacturing Research published a new iteration of one of its most ambitious additive market tracking projects, which attempts to put a number on this phenomenon: how many parts are printed each year?

Our best answer, which necessarily excludes at least some of the market, is about 28 million metal parts and 454 million polymer parts for 2025. But the bigger change is not just how many parts are being printed. It is how they’re produced and what customers expect from service providers.

What was once an “additive print services” market is becoming an “additive production services” market. We are building a new model to track and forecast this market and are pre-selling the report at a 50%+ discount upon publication in Q4 2026/Q1 2027.

“Too Good to be True”

The latest edition of 3D ADEPT Mag is out.

 

With no FAA, no FDA, and no thirty-year service life to prove it, we’re often tempted to think AM looks way too easy in the creative industries.

From entertainment, jewelry, and architecture to the arts and even fashion, applications seem to be manufactured in the blink of an eye. A prop? A ring? A facade? It just has to look convincing under a light.

Yet, most sections of this new edition of 3D ADEPT Mag highlight how it remains complex, demanding, and as remarkable as applications in aerospace or medical.

The problem may be how we measure it. When looking at AM in the creative industries, we unconsciously expect the technology to generate the billions it promises elsewhere. What should raise our interest is the applications AM enables, what experts from these industries know that we do not, and how each of them builds a business model that survives without high part volumes.

With this foundation in mind, you will realize that in this issue, technology experts and experts from the creative industries are teaching us when not to deploy AM, what the business model of AM looks like in entertainment, fashion, architecture, jewelry, or even sports or consumer goods sectors.

After weeks of talking and learning from them, we are now eager to believe creative industries are the most honest testing ground for AM. With the fewest constraints, experts across these industries are teaching us that they are more selective and more demanding about what deserves to be printed.
