March 2024

President’s report

The home stretch… I’ll be on a plane heading for Chicago this week in anticipation of your arrival on Sunday, March 10.

By now, you’ve likely managed all the logistics for your attendance: registration, hotel booking, task list (if sponsoring/exhibiting), and registration for pre-conference events (courses and/or site visits). But there are a few planning details I’d like to share.

What to pack:

Basic essentials (wardrobe and toiletries), comfy shoes, note-taking items, business cards, chargers, and 80s costume if you plan to participate in dressing up. And although you can’t pack it in your suitcase, bring along a willingness to engage through coaching, sharing, learning, and exploring!

What to attend:

Track sessions:
You may have reviewed our conference agenda or online planner. Another tool is the mobile app (download information went out last week). We have so many great sessions in a variety of tracks, so a little advanced planning (tag what looks interesting in the online planner or mobile app) will help you get the most out of the conference.

General sessions:
Our general sessions (held each morning in the International Ballroom) are filled with great information, too – keynote speakers, Innovators Showcase, award presentations, business meeting, elections, and member feedback.

AMUGexpo:
Our AMUGExpo floor is supported by industry organizations that aid in the additively manufactured products… the offerings and contributions are vast. Be sure to share time with these companies that support our conference and ultimately support your organization.

Meals:
You will be well-fed with carefully selected menu options. Mealtimes are terrific networking opportunities.

Evening activities:
We want your learning, meeting, and collaborating to be active, memorable, and impactful.

What to remember:

Your investment in AMUG matters to us! Your investment in AMUG inspires us! Your investment in AMUG allows us to invest in advancing additive technologies.

Travel safe! I’ll see you very soon!

Cheerfully,

Shannon VanDeren

VoxelMatters releases Medical AM Focus 2024 eBook

The medical AM sector is one of the most significant adopters of 3D printing technologies for the production of consumer-targeted, end-use products, including prosthetics and orthotics, implants, devices and physical models. Beyond this, the medical sphere is also one of the areas where life-changing innovations are taking place. In this eBook, we’re looking at some particularly cutting-edge areas of medical AM, including 3D printed pharmaceuticals and nanoscale printing.

This VoxelMatters’ eBook edition includes an analysis of metal and polymer AM in the medical industry, with exclusive insights from VoxelMatters’ recent Metal AM and Polymer AM market reports. We are also excited to present a feature on biomaterial expert Rousselot and its X-Pure gelatins. Our mapping chapter takes stock of the nanoscale and microscale 3D printing efforts being undertaken in the medical sphere, and in the final story, we consider the state of 3D-printed pharmaceuticals.

VoxelMatters’ eBook can be viewed by scrolling through the online version or downloading it to view on your favorite mobile device. In our effort to maintain an open discourse and open access to AM news, the publication is free to access.

Ready to race?

A new chapter in the rich history of racing is about to be written. Moving from the NASCAR circuit of St. Louis to the yet-to-be-fully disclosed Chicago gravity track, the 3D Printing Industry racing team is ready for the inaugural AMUGderby. Taking a break from subjecting 3D printers to a degree of scrutiny most reviews cannot manage, the engineers here in the 3DPI office have taken on the challenge to design, build, test, and redesign a vehicle suitable for this momentous occasion.

We’re used to being first with the news, but will we be first in the race? See you on the start line, fellow media sponsors!

While speed is of the essence in the derby, for us, the week will be more of a marathon than a sprint. We’re looking forward to reconnecting with the industry at the first major show of the year; if you’d like to meet, I encourage you to get in touch.

See you on Sunday!

Who are the American manufacturers of composite 3D printers?

The U.S. AM market continues to be the biggest in the world, with the largest number of 3D printer manufacturers, material developers, startups, and even 3D printing service providers. But considering its size, it can be hard to know who exactly the players are. For example, one realm where we have seen growth in the USA is in composite 3D printing. But who exactly are the main solution providers? Where are they based in the country?

We took a closer look at this listing in this series on the American manufacturers of composite 3D printers. Discover what we found here.

While you’re busy finalizing your AMUG agenda and squeezing those last items into your suitcase, it’s also a good idea to get your travel playlist sorted. Over the last month, TCT’s Additive Insight podcast has welcomed two AMUG guests to get us ready for this year’s conference.

On episode #164, AMUG President Shannon VanDeren shared how her enthusiasm for AM began at Materialise in 2010, top tips for getting the most out of this year’s event (“Talk to everybody!”), and her optimism for the future of 3D printing. In episode #169, keynote speaker Olaf Diegel, Professor of Additive Manufacturing at the University of Auckland, discussed the importance of DfAM (and why we’re not using it nearly enough), how his work at the University’s Creative Design and Additive Manufacturing Lab combines engineering and creative thinking, and of course, those famous 3D printed guitars.
