March 2025

President’s Report

It’s our month! It’s AMUG month! Yeee-hawwwww!

In just a couple of weeks, we’ll be back together – shaking hands, sharing hugs, inspiring one another, coaching one another, meeting one another, and engaging one another. My goodness, if networking and learning from your peers are things you value, then AMUG is surely the place to be!

I thought I’d share a final “list” of things to consider as you ready yourself for AMUG 2025.

Shannon VanDeren
President

  • Register for AMUG 2025, if you haven’t already.
  • Register your company to sponsor if you haven’t already done so and wish to share your product/service with attendees and fellow sponsors.
  • Book your hotel at the Chicago Hilton (this is where the conference and all evening activities take place so staying onsite is so simple, and the rate is outstanding for downtown Chicago).
  • Book your flights and make travel arrangements.
  • Review the online planner. You can start to flag sessions you do not want to miss!
  • If you wish to participate in one of the pre-conference training sessions, be sure to register.
  • If you are a first-time attendee, mark your calendar to join us for the New Member Welcome on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
  • Review our Board of Directors nominees (in the online planner), as we will vote on four positions this year.
  • Submit your AMUGderby entry (make a 3D-printed derby car to race on an official Scouts track).
  • Order business cards and bring an ample supply.
  • If you are a DINO, pack your DINO pin.
  • If you enjoy themed events, pack your western wear for Wednesday’s Special Event & Dinner.
  • Review our sponsor list (on our website and mobile app) and create your list of questions for them.
  • Get plenty of rest before you show up (this 4.5-day event is FULL of opportunity and time investment options).

We don’t HAVE TO make it a great event…We GET TO make it a great event! We GET TO spend time with you. We GET TO learn from one another. We GET TO build lasting relationships by sharing time with fellow users who invest in each other and themselves.

As always, I am right here and ready to hear from you, to meet you, to encourage you. If I may be helpful to you, please reach out to me at president@amug.com.

I can’t wait to see you very soon.

Mosey into the AMUG New Member Roundup

Howdy, greenhorns and trailblazers! If you’re new to AMUG Conferences, it’s time to dust off your boots and ride on over to the New Member Welcome on Sunday, March 30, at 4:00 pm. This ain’t just any old shindig — it’s your first step into the AMUG frontier, where industry pioneers, innovators, and fellow newcomers gather to swap stories, share insights, and kick-start a week of legendary networking.

Don’t miss the New Member Welcome shindig.

Why you should gallop on over:

Meet the AMUG posse: Get introduced to board and committee members who’ll help you navigate the AMUG landscape.

Wrangle up some new friends: Connect with other new members and start forming alliances that’ll last all week (and beyond!).

Get the lay of the land: Learn what to expect during AMUG 2025 and how to make the most of every session, event, and opportunity.

Share some laughs: We promise a few good chuckles (and maybe a few tall tales).

If you’re fixin’ to have a rootin’-tootin’ time, pack your best western gear. This year’s Special Event & Dinner is going full-on wild west. Dust off your cowboy hats, shine up those boots, and get ready for a night of saloon-style revelry. You won’t want to miss it!

Give us a holler. If you have any questions leading up to the event.  Don’t be shy — reach out to the New Member Committee at NewMember@amug.com. We’re here to help make sure your first AMUG experience is legendary!

Whether you’re a lone ranger or riding with a posse, we guarantee you’ll leave feeling like part of the AMUG family.

See y’all there!

AMUG Scholarship Winners

Two very deserving individuals have been selected for the AMUG Scholarships: Colleen Murray, Ph.D., and Justin Levy. Meet them at the conference and hear their stories when they take the AMUG stage on Tuesday, April 1.

Colleen, a lecturer in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland (UMD), received the Randy Stevens Scholarship. Olga Ivanova, co-chair of the Scholarship Committee, said, “Dr. Murray is actively developing curricula that would benefit from her engaging with the industry leaders at the AMUG Conference. Her research and work focus on practical applications, ensuring that innovative ideas can be effectively translated into real-world use, which stood out.”

Justin, a third-year mechanical engineering student at The Ohio State University (OSU), received the Guy E. Bourdeau Scholarship. Brent Griffith, co-chair of the Scholarship Committee, said, “Justin showed a passion for additive manufacturing, and his work demonstrated a desire to continue to push boundaries beyond what he has done. He has developed creative solutions to complex problems as a student, and we are sure this will continue when he transitions to his career.”

Congratulations, Colleen and Justin!

Registrations for 3D ADEPT Media’s Additive Talks series are officially open!

Over the years, this interactive platform has helped our community cut through the noise in the AM world — offering a safe space to ask experts questions and, more importantly, shape discussions on what the status quo should be.

On April 2, from 3:30 – 4:30 pm CET (9:30 – 10:30 am ET), we’re kicking off a new season with a hot topic in aerospace: safety. For the first time, we’ll hear not only from AM users but also from authorities working behind the scenes to certify 3D-printed parts.

Space is limited — questions won’t go unanswered. Be prepared and secure your spot here.

Aeropspace (safety) is the upcoming topic in Additive Talks.

What to Expect at the 2025 AMUG Conference

The AMUG Conference is an event by AM users for AM users, and this will be the first year that Ian Wright, Senior Editor, has the opportunity to attend. Everyone he’s spoken to about it thus far has told him it’s an industry event unlike any other.

To get a better sense of what to expect, Ian sat down with Ed Graham, AMUG’s Director of Education and Conference.

See what he had to say in this article.

Chicago – Let’s Go!

Paris on the Prairie or Chiberia? Both are apparently nicknames for Chicago, where, alongside all right-thinking AM professionals, the 3D Printing Industry will return later this month for AMUG 2025.

As excitement mounts and the days waiting for this year’s AMUG Conference are crossed off the calendar, please consider this question: How is the adoption of AM by the automotive sector progressing? If one person knows, then it’s Toyota’s Dallas Martin. We spoke with Dallas at length on subjects ranging from powder bed fusion to powertrains. What is the future for AM and automotive? Find out here.

Hindsight is a splendid thing, and our interview with Joe Allison covers hard-earned lessons and insights from a rich and varied AM career spanning almost four decades. Catch up now before he takes to the stage in the City of Big Shoulders – see you there!
